THE perfect place to explore by car

COUNTY GALWAY
DIVERSE LANDSCAPES AND CULTURE

Parks, moorland, renaissance city and peat bogs.

The vibrant city of Galway stands on its own at the mid-point of the Wild Atlantic way. Galway Bay divides two different types of landscape, making this area a great place to visit to see much of what Ireland is famous for. Galway prides itself as a renaissance city combining youth with tradition creating a thriving café/bar culture. To the north of the city lies the Connemara National Park, home to moorland, mountains and peat bogs that are still harvested today. To the South (actually in County Clare) lies The Burren an area of limestone pavements and rocky outcrops, where traditional dolmen graves defy the elements. The areas around Galway are diverse in landscape and culture and perfect for exploring in your car.

Route highlights

The Twelve Pins mountain range provides the backdrop to the stunning landscape of Connemara. This large expanse of moorland, bogs and lakes appears to go on forever. Kylemore Abbey marks its northern boundary; a working monastery and tourist attraction in its own right.

The village of Clifden marks the start and finish of the Sky Road, a circular road that hugs the rocky cliffs offering stunning views. The Cliffs of Moher are high vertical walls or rock that reach up from the Atlantic and with their new welcome centre, provides an impressive story to match the views.
