EXPLORE THE MOUNTAINS OF MOURNE

COUNTY DOWN
MYSTICAL FORESTS

From majestic mountain landscapes to seaside towns, castles and mansions.

“I might as well be where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea” wrote Percy French in 1896. More than 120 years later the views are still worth writing about. There is a lot to discover in a small area, with majestic mountain landscapes, giving way to mystical forests. There are seaside towns and small fishing communities, baronial castles and Georgian mansions, preserving the much changing history of this area. Of course, religion has had a major say in the development of this area, and the hill-top Downpatrick Cathedral is the highlight, where a simple stone slab marks the resting place of St. Patrick, the patron saint of all Ireland.

Route highlights

The granite tors that sit on top of the Mourne Mountains can’t be reached by car, although a hike will also reward you with sensational views on a clear day. The roads that dissect the mountains do provide more than a glimpse of this beautiful scenery. Stop by Silent Valley in the mountains for a better view adjacent to the still reservoirs.

Across the chain ferry to the Ards Peninsula is Mount Stewart. This Georgian mansion is full of history and stories and the well-kept gardens are a delight for those that enjoy a wander. Look out for the local seals basking on the sandbanks in the tidal lough opposite.
