THE FORGOTTEN COUNTY OF IRELAND

COUNTY DONEGAL
Natural beauty

Unspoilt beaches, still loughs, clouded peaks and lush green valleys

Natives of Donegal often describe their home as “the forgotten county of Ireland”, as although it is part of the Republic of Ireland, it is tucked away in the North-West, far away from the cities of Dublin, Cork and Galway. However, Donegal’s greatest draw is its natural beauty; unspoilt beaches, still loughs, clouded peaks and lush green valleys. All of these make it the perfect area for walkers, surfers, golfers and of course motorists wanting to see the wild side of Ireland. The Donegal food is good too; often fresh from the daily catch brought in on the morning’s boats or oysters farmed in the bay. Donegal may not have the big towns and cities, but it goes large with vistas, wildlife and landscapes.
Route highlights  You could be forgiven for thinking that you were in the middle of nowhere as you approach Glenveagh National Park, but down in the valley is Glenveagh Castle situated on the most gorgeous spot on the edge of Lough Veagh. The parkland covers more than 100 square miles and is home to the largest red deer population in Ireland, as well as the formerly extinct Golden Eagle. Donegal is also home of Slieve League; the largest sea cliffs in Europe. The road to the viewpoint is steep but the views from the top are magnificent.
