Experience some of Ireland’s most picturesque views
The beautiful town of Westport is situated on a sheltered harbour on Ireland’s Atlantic coast. The surrounding landscapes have been carved by the rain, wind and sea to provide some of Ireland’s most picturesque views.
The area’s history of clan chieftains and pirate queens is a far cry from the traditional tourist town that Westport has become. A short drive from the town will take you to long sandy beaches and sheltered valleys continuing the story of the Wild Atlantic Way.
Route highlights
Achill Island is reached by a bridge from the mainland and offers some of the best coastal roads in Ireland. When the sun shines the colour of the sea has been likened to the Mediterranean and with 5 blue flag beaches on the island it is easy to see why. The coast road is easy to follow and the sea views are second to none.
South of Westport, beyond the pilgrimage mountain of Croagh Patrick, lies the Doolough pass, through which the road winds opening up views of lakes and mountains on all sides. The stately home of Westport House has had a rich and varied history and well worth a visit when staying in the town.
