Drive mountain passes, coastal roads & scenic byways
The gateway to the stunning scenery of County Kerry is the town of Killarney; a tourist town servicing the thousands of visitors each year. Beyond the town are some of the best driving routes that Ireland has to offer. There are mountain passes, coastal roads & scenic byways aplenty. The famous Ring of Kerry draws a lot of people, although it never feels too crowded, whilst it is the neighbouring Dingle and Beara peninsulas that really showcase Ireland at its best. Counties Cork and Kerry form the south-west corner of the Wild Atlantic Way and it certainly lives up to its name here.
Route highlights
Whilst the Ring of Kerry and Valencia Island are well known and reward drivers with some spectacular coastal views, it is really the Dingle and Beara peninsulas where you can get away from the coaches and discover the real dramatic views of Ireland.
The Connor Pass just outside the artisan Dingle town is the highest pass in Ireland, whilst the many hairpin-bends of the Healey Pass that crosses the Beara peninsula are reminiscent of the Alps or the Pyrenees. It not just mountain roads and coastal views in Kerry, as Muckross House and Bantry can provide a little history and culture to the touring mix.
